Anett Kontaveit v Elise Mertens Head to Head

Their most recent meeting came in Miami last year where Mertens won in three sets, while Kontaveit’s only victory had come in their first match in Biel in 2017.

Coming into this tournament on the back of a title win in St. Petersburg, Kontaveit wasted no time in getting past her opening account in Doha.
After getting a first round bye, Kontaveit routed Anna Konjuh 6-2, 6-3 in a mere hour and 26 minutes to complete her sixth win in a row. Her previous five wins had included scalps in the form of Belinda Bencic, Jelena Ostapenko and Maria Sakkari.
The match began on a strange note with neither player able to hold serve in the first four games – Kontaveit getting broken twice as well. But from that point onward, the Estonian got her serving mojo back and held on for the rest of the encounter.
In turn she broke her opponent twice in the opening set and once more in the second to seal the encounter.

Mertens Benefits from Kvitova Injury
A left wrist injury for Petra Kvitova meant Mertens was able to advance to the third round but not before the Belgian led 7-5, 1-2 over the former Grand Slam winner.
In a match where neither player managed a good grip over their serves, seven breaks ensued and it was one of these in the 11th game of the opening set that proved to be a decisive one for Mertens.
The second set was going on serve till the third game when Kvitova needed the services of the trainer before throwing in the towel.
Mertens had earlier needed three sets to get past Jasmine Paolini in the first round following a middling start to the season which had seen her get to round four at Australian Open.
