Maria Sakkari v Jessica Pegula Head to Head

There have been three meetings between these two players including one as recently as the Australian Open earlier this year and Sakkari leads 2-1.

Pegula’s only win had come at that Australian Open fourth round match where she raced off to a straight-set result.

Sakkari Continues Good Form

After reaching the final of the St. Petersburg Open before this tournament, Sakkari would have been expected to do well against Ann Li in the first match she played here.

And that’s exactly how things went for the Greek number one who demolished her opponent in an hour and 16 minutes, winning 6-3, 6-3 to reach the third round.

Having gotten herself a first round bye, Sakkari broke Li twice in the first set to take the lead in the match. And while there were four exchanges of breaks in the second, back to back breaks in sixth and eighth games allowed Sakkari to complete the win.

She now faces a far trickier opponent in the third round, one who had beaten her only last month.

Pegula Seals Another Easy Win

After an early loss in Dubai last week, Pegula seems to have turned things around here with the American registering back to back straight-set wins.

She started off with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Katerina Siniakova in the first round before defeating Kaja Juvan 6-3, 6-3 in the second. In a match lasting nearly an hour and a half, Pegula broke her opponent five times to claim her third round spot.

Pegula’s far superior first serve percentage win of 72% is what allowed her to stand in a good stead, and while she was broken twice herself, it wasn’t enough for Juvan to get close to her opponent.

Can she now dish out a similar treatment to Sakkari whom she has got the better of recently?

Sakkari v Pegula Prediction and Tip

This could be a gritty battle but Sakkari’s solid form makes her a favourite to ease into the fourth round.
