Taylor Fritz v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, in Los Cabos, Mexico in 2018, and in Stockholm a year later, Fritz winning on each occasion.

Fritz Sails into Second Round

Fritz made a strong start to the season, winning two out of his three matches playing in the ATP Cup for the USA, beating both Cameron Norrie and Felix Augur-Aliassime along the way, before going on to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time at the Australian Open.

He will have regrets how he then twice let a one set lead over Stefanos Tsitsipas slip.

In his one event since then, he was knocked out in the second \round in Dallas, but made a convincing start in Acapulco. At a time when so many matches in the first round  went to three sets, he would have been glad to see off the challenge of Adrian Mannarino of France. The world number 55, without too much difficulty.

The American was on top from the beginning of the match, securing an early break. Mannarino did have his chances to break back when Paul served for the set, but could not take any of them, and he was made to pay for that, as he was broken again at the start of the second set,

Mannarino did save five break points to prevent him going further behind, but he could do nothing with the Fritz serve, and the pressure told in the end, and he was broken again serving to stay in the match.

Nishioka Beats Spanish Veteran

Nishioka has been looking to arrest the slide that has seen him drop out of the top 100 since the start of the year, and, after a poor Australian campaign in which he failed to win a main draw match, he turned to the Challenger circuit to find some form.

That seemed to do the trick, as he reached two successive finals, in Columbus and Cleveland, losing to the same man each time, Dominic Stephan Stricker of Switzerland.

Back on the main tour, he reached the second round in Dallas, but failed to progress beyond the opening round in Delray Beach.

Forced to qualify in Acapulco, he saw off two Germans in the form of Cedrik-Marcel Stebe and Peter Gojowczyk, to earn himself a first round tie against the Spanish veteran and wildcard Feliciano Lopez.

Nishioka was the first to drop his serve and, although he immediately levelled, he went a break down again, and a further break gave Lopez the first set.

However, it was all one way traffic in the second set in favour of the Japanese man, with the Spaniard failing to win a single game.

To underline his strong position, he soon found himself two breaks to the good in the third set.  Lopez was able to pull one of those back, but there were no further alarms for Nishioka after that.

Fritz v Nishioka Prediction and Tip

Fritz has won both of the two previous matches between these two, and there is little to suggest tat Nishioka is in the sort of form to stop him making it three.
