Maria Sakkari is enjoying tennis in 2022 as the Greek player is having a very good start to the year. Last year was a proper breakout for the player who nearly won several big events but ultimately that elusive trophy remains one of the things missing.
Sakkari has a 10-3 record on the year with impressive wins over several players. She was one game away from winning St. Petersburg but fell apart late and lost to Anett Kontaveit. Doha suits her game rather well and so far her level has been pretty steady and good overall.
Wins over Anne Li and Jessica Pegula are impressive and are showing that Sakkari truly evolved into a very confident and consistent player that is expected to make a deep run at every went she plays. There are some things missing from her game like mental toughness but over time she will get there.

Back to Winning Ways in Doha for Gauff
Coco Gauff did not enjoy a brilliant start to the season despite reaching the semifinal in Adelaide. The American crashed out pretty early at the Australian Open and she is still failing at reaching that next step after breaking into the top 50.
Coco has tremendous consistency issues with the American ranging from brilliant to abysmal depending on the day and situation in the match. In Doha, things have finally clicked a bit for the American who first defeated Shelby Roger after which she took down Caroline Garcia.
Her display against Paula Badosa was brilliant with Gauff utterly destroying Badosa with her return. That return will prove a crucial part in this match as well with Sakkari capable of serving very well. If Gauff can maintain the pressure she will be dangerous.
Sakkari v Gauff Prediction and Tip
This is a very interesting matchup between two players who are playing very well at this event. Both have been consistent in their level and performances in Doha and it’s quite tricky to call. Sakkari is the more consistent player and also more complete at this stage but the Greek player has shown the ability to meltdown in the wrong moment.
Gauff is certainly capable of suing that to her advantage and a similar thing happened last year in Rome with Sakkari completely losing her compass after winning a set with 6-1. She lost the next one with 1-6 and Gauff moved on. I do think Gauff will give Sakkari some trouble especially if she returns like against Badosa.
However, I think Sakkari is generally been good this season and this is hardly a final so her mental fortitude should be good enough to handle any pressure here. I say back Sakkari simply because she has been more consistent this year.
