Muguruza Marches On
Two time Qatar Open finalist, Garbine Muguruza marched into the quarterfinals on Wednesday with a 6-0, 6-2 drubbing of Madison Brengle of the United States.
Muguruza won 75% points on the first serve, converted five of nine break points and saved all three that she held to win the match in just over an hour and to advance to the last eight in Doha for the fifth time. While the Spaniard lost in the quarters in 2016 and 2020, she went all the way to the title match in 2018 and 2021. But on both the occasions, Muguruza was denied a title by Petra Kvitova.
In the second round on Tuesday, the 28-year-old had beaten Romania’s Sorana Cîrstea 7-6 (7-4), 6-1.
As a result of her two wins in Qatar, the two-time major champion is now 5-3 for the season. She had won her opening match in all the three tournaments she featured in this year, but fell in the second round of each.
Having got off to a brilliant start, the former World No. 1 will now look to reach her first semifinal of the season. She was a quarterfinalist in Sydney this year but lost to Daria Kasatkina. Can she make the final four in Doha?

Ostapenko Upsets Second Seed
Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko stunned second seed Barbora Krejcikova on Wednesday to storm into the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Ostapenko converted five of nine break points and saved five of seven to oust the Czech 6-3, 6-2. This was the Latvian’s eighth consecutive victory after she clinched the Dubai title last week by demolishing Veronika Kudermetova in the final.
The World No. 13 had begun her Doha campaign with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over France’s Oceane Dodin. She had to eke out a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory against American Amanda Anisimova in the second round.
The 24-year-old is 13-3 this season. A five-time champion on the tour, Ostapenko missed out on the Doha title in 2016 after going down to Spain’s Carla Suárez Navarro in the final. She has never reached the last eight in Qatar since then.
Muguruza v Ostapenko Prediction and Tip
