Pedro Martinez v Alejandro Tabilo Head to Head

Martinez beat Tabilo in their only previous meeting in Buenos Aires earlier this month.

Martinez Hustles Past Hanfmann

World No. 72 Pedro Martinez of Spain needed just an hour and 22 minutes to dispatch Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann in the Chile Open quarterfinals on Friday.

Dictating terms from start to finish, Martinez broke the German twice in both the sets and saved all six of the break points that he faced to down the World No. 115, 6-2, 6-2.

It was an easy outing for the 24-year-old, who had needed three hours and 31 minutes to outlast compatriot Jaume Munar 6-4, 5-7, 7-5, in the Round of 16 on Thursday.

Friday’s win over Hanfmann marked Martinez’s first consecutive victory of the season. In his previous five tournaments, he had won his opening match but lost the next.

A runner-up in Kitzbuhel last year, Martinez is making his debut in Santiago. This is the first tournament of the season, when he has gone past the Round of 16. Can he reach a second final with a win on Saturday? Having beaten Tabilo recently he would definitely hold the edge in the semifinal.

Tabilo Continues to Impress

Cordoba Open finalist Alejandro Tabilo is one win away from a second final of the season. The 24-year-old Chilean, who received a wild card for the tournament, dumped out sixth seed Miomir Kecmanovic of Serbia in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Tabilo got off to a flying start, winning the first five games of the match before closing out the first set 6-1. He broke Kecmanovic in the first game of the second but the Serb didn’t allow the Chilean to build on the lead, breaking back in the next game. Eventually Tabilo did earn another break in the seventh game and then held on a for a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

The win follows a stunning Round of 16 upset of top seed Cristian Garin. Tabilo, who is yet to drop a set in the tournament, had beaten the World No. 27, 6-3, 6-3.

This was the second time that he had accounted for a top seed this year, having achieved the feat in the Cordoba Open semifinal when he ousted Diego Schwartzman in straight sets. Tabilo fell in the Cordoba final to Albert Ramos-Vinolas despite taking the first set.

The 24-year-old Chilean, who improved his season record to 8-5 with Friday’s win, had begun the tournament with a straight sets win over Argentina’s Renzo Olivo.

Martinez v Tabilo Prediction and Tip

Martinez will have the psychological advantage having beaten Tabilo in straight sets in Buenos Aires. However, the Chilean knows the conditions better at home and will have the crowd behind him as well. Three sets seem imminent with Tabilo getting his Buenos Aires revenge.
