The Canadian and world number 19, Fernandez is at her career-best ranking at the moment but hasn’t made the kind of start she would have loved to make to the season.
Starting off at the Adelaide International, Fernandez was a straight-set winner over Ekaterina Alexandrova in her opening round but barely lasted an hour in her second round. She fell 6-1, 6-2 to Iga Swiatek.
Things turned for the worse at Australian Open where Fernandez went into her opening round match against Madison Inglis at 1/10 odds and lost. Making matters more difficult was the nature of that defeat as the Canadian lost in straight sets again, 6-4, 6-2.
Interestingly, she has played just these two tournaments the whole of season and with Indian Wells Open coming up next, she would love to get some of her rustiness off. Can she start off with a solid showing here though?

Karolina Schmiedlova Coming off Confident Showing
Karolina Schmiedlova was once ranked 26th in the world but the 27-year-old has fallen by the wayside and is currently struggling to retain a spot in the top 100. A performance like the one she dished out in Guadalajara last week, however, should help her regain some of her lost glory.
There, she came through in straight sets to make it to the last eight, beating Nuria Parrizas-Diaz and Anastasia Potapova in the first two rounds respectively.
What made those wins even more commendable was the fact she was a second favourite going into both those matches.
The Slovak was 11/8 to win both those rounds, and managed to register relatively easy wins. And while she fell to Wang Qiang in the quarterfinals, she seemed to have done enough to regain some of her lost confidence.
Can she now surprise the much higher-ranked but struggling Fernandez?

This might not look very close on paper but given the form shown by the two players in recent past, there might be a third set in the offing here.
