Anna Kalinskaya v Zheng Qinwen Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came last week when the two faced off at the Guadalajara Open. It was a first round encounter as well and Kalinskaya had won it in three sets en route her semifinal appearance.

Kalinskaya At Her Career Best

Having not gotten past the first round at any of the tournaments she played in before last week’s Guadalajara Open, Kalinskaya suddenly finds herself at her career-best ranking of 86th in the world.

And that is to do with her rare semifinal appearance at a WTA singles competition.

After back to back three-set wins in the first two rounds in Guadalajara, Kalinskaya, who was 1/1 to win against the seeded Maria Camila Osorio Serrano, carved out a shock 6-4, 6-1 win.

She could have gone one better too when the Russian took a 6-3, 3-0 lead over Sloane Stephens in the semifinal but a back injury hindered her movements during the second set. Kalinskaya retired from the match at a set apiece.

The form is on her side but will Kalinskaya be fit enough to take on her opponent in this opener?

Qinwen Also Riding a Wave

Much like Kalinskaya, Qinwen is also at her career-best as far as her ranking is concerned, and a lot is to do with her showing at each of the competition she has played in bar last week’s Guadalajara Open.

It started with a semifinal appearance at the Melbourne Summer Set 1 where Qinwen had made it through as a qualifier, following which she had to go through another set of qualifiers to enter the main draw at Australian Open. There, Qinwen registered a difficult, three-set win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich to make it to the second.

This was her first appearance at a Grand Slam and for her to register a win first up as a qualifier would have given her a lot of confidence.

As would the title win in an ITF tournament in Orlando where she overcame Christina McHale in the final. She lost just 15 games in the entire tournament.

Can she avenge the Kalinskaya defeat from last week?

Kalinskaya v Qinwen Prediction and Tip

Kalinskaya might have overcome Qinwen last week but her back injury and Qinwen’s form could see a different result here.

Tip: Qinwen Zheng to win in straight sets: 10/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
