Marcela Zacarias has had a muted start to the 2022 season but is hoping for a turnaround at her home tournament in Mexico.
The 27-year-old is set to compete in the second first WTA event of the year, with her stints coming on the ITF circuit. She hasn’t been particularly successful; starting as a qualifier, Zacarias made it to the early rounds in the main draw.
Last week, she participated in the Guadalajara Open but was downed by Hailey Baptiste in the opening qualifying round.
Overall, Zacarias is well-experienced and has 23 ITF finals to her name – going the distance in 16 of them. And while she lacks upper-tier experience, she has a solid opportunity here to build some rhythm.

Navarro, Looking for Traction
20-year-old Emma Navarro will compete in only her second tournament of the season. She skipped the Australian swing and featured only in the ITF Rome, the USA where she reached the semis (losing to Tatjana Maria in straight sets).
A junior Grand Slam finalist, the American spent the bulk of the last season on the ITF circuit. She ultimately walked away with an ITF title in Orlando alongside a quarterfinal run in the Charleston Challenger.
Like Zacarias, she also lacks the main tour experience and more importantly, hasn’t got that much momentum heading into March.

Zacarias makes for an appealing bet because she is available at a higher price and her prospects of winning this one are not all that bad. Despite her results, she has kept at the sport this year and will be playing on her home turf.
