Viktorija Golubic opened the year up with some solid results however the Swiss player is yet to really find any consistency. It was not always her fault as she lost to Iga Swiatek last week in Doha after beating Andrea Petkovic in round 2.
The Swiss player plays a very good brand of tennis that can get the job done against the majority of players ranked below her. Solid play this year (5-5) allowed her to jump to number 35 in the rankings which is a very good result. In the first round here she bested Mai Hontama in a very close 3-set match.
Overall Golubic is very solid both on hard courts and on clay courts. She will need a very good effort against Diatchenko who has been on a tear to win the match but if somebody can do its Golubic who rarely disappoints with her play.

Six In a Row for Diatchenko
Vitalia Diatchenko won six matches in a row and she will be looking for consecutive win number 7 in the matchup against Golubic. The Russian caught fire recently on hard courts cruising to an ITF title in Macon. Things did not change much when she arrived in Lyon as she quickly notched another win.
This one came against Anna-Lena Friedsam and it was much harder to get compared to her run in Macon. Obviously, the level of competition is much higher than anything she faced in Macon so it was somewhat expected. To get number 7 she will need to pass a very hard test in the like of Golubic.
It remains to be seen whether she will be up for it but her tennis suits indoor courts rather well. She is tall and is capable of producing strong serves which could do her well. She will need to have a certain level of aggressiveness and consistency from the baseline to be able to win that match.
Golubic v Diatchenko Prediction and Tip
Viktorija Golubic is the better player by far and anything but her victory would be quite shocking. However, Diatchenko has been on a tear recently winning six matches in a row and dismissing her easily would be a bad thing to do.
The Russian can harm the Swiss but she will need to play a flawless match to do so. Against Friedsam she showed weakness that can be exploited and Golubic will scout her opponent rather well. The Swiss player is always prepared and I expect her to be this time as well.
Diatchenko will have to play her best tennis to win this while Golubic won’t and there lies the key. If the Swiss player plays a solid match with her strong baseline game I think she will win this rather easily. I just don’t see what Diatchenko can do to match that.
