Camila Osorio v Nuria Parrizas-Diaz Head to Head

Osorio won their only meeting at a qualifying round in Wimbledon last year.

Outplayed in the first set, Camila Osorio made a resounding comeback to upset top seed Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinals of the Monterrey Open on Saturday morning. The match which began on Friday night, needed two hours and 35 minutes before the fifth seed outlasted the Ukrainian 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

With the win, the World No. 44 extended her winning record against the World No. 15 to 2-0. She had also beaten Svitolina in Tenerife last year and that match had a similar feel, with the Ukrainian winning the first set and the Colombian bouncing back.

On Friday, Svitolina won the first set with ease, breaking Osorio twice in the set. In the second, both players held serve till the last game in which Osorio got the break and took the match to the third. Svitolina was racing away to victory in the fourth, having taken a 1-4 lead with two breaks of serves, but the Colombian fought back to win the next four in a row and send the set back on serve.

The Ukrainian took a 0-3 lead in the tiebreak, but yet again Osorio fought back to clinch the match and march into the semifinals.

This was the first three-setter that Osorio played in the tournament. She had beaten Poland’s Magdalena Fręch 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) in the first round and Mexico’s Marcela Zacarías 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 in the second round.

Last month, Osorio was a quarterfinalist in Guadalajara. She will be hoping to reach a first semifinal since her runner-up finish in Tenerife in October.

Parrizas-Diaz Fights Off Sorribes Tormo to Reach First SF

Sixth seed Nuria Parrizas-Diaz of Spain battled past fourth seed and compatriot Sara Sorribes Tormo in a three-hour-and-five-minute quarterfinal on Friday to reach the first tour-level semifinal of her career.

Parrizas-Diaz, who was ranked 187th in the world at this time of the year last year, has made tremendous gains over the last 12 months, winning five ITF titles and her first two WTA 125 titles in 2021. Currently ranked No. 51st in the world, Parrizas-Diaz began the tournament with an easy 6-2, 6-1 win over Japan’s Misaki Doi and then toughed it out against Heather Watson in the second round, defeating the Briton 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).

The 30-year-old faced an even tougher test in the quarterfinal on Friday. Sorribes Tormo got the first beak of the match to take a 1-3 lead in the first set, but it was all Parrizas-Diaz from there on, who won the next five games in a row to take the first set. The second set was dominated by the fourth seed, who got broken once, but enjoyed four breaks of serve to force the deciding set.

Parizas-Diaz started the third set on a solid note, breaking Sorribes Tormo in the very first game, but the World No. 36 got the break back in the sixth game. A series of three more breaks followed, with Parizas-Diaz restoring her one-break advantage and then closing out the epic contest in the next game for a 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 win.

Osorio will be the favourite to win this contest. Expect Parrizas-Diaz to put up a fight, but the Colombian to advance to the final.
