Naomi Osaka v Sloane Stephens Head to Head

There have been two previous meetings between these players with Stephens winning both times.

The first time they met was in Acapulco in 2016 which resulted in a straight-set win for Stephens before the American overcame Osaka in three sets at the WTA Finals.

Osaka Hoping to Climb up the WTA Ladder

After opting to play in only a handful of tournaments last season because of a variety of reasons, Osaka made a return to courts this year at the Melbourne Summer Set 1.

The Japanese former world number one marched into the semifinal with straightforward wins before retiring from her match against Veronika Kudermetova. In doing so, Osaka had given a glimpse into her form, with her rustiness having been shaken off easily.

Not surprisingly then, Osaka ended up marching into the third round at Australian Open without much ado, starting out as a 1/3 favourite against Amanda Anisimova in that match.

Up a set, Osaka then proceeded to go down in that encounter, falling in a third set tie-breaker and crashing out of the competition. And while that was the first defeat for her, Osaka will now look to rebuild her form leading into the rest of the season, at a tournament she had won in 2018.

Stephens Coming off Title Win

Having started off the year at Australian Open with a first round defeat, not too much was expected out of Stephens in the second tournament she played.

Featuring at Guadalajara, Stephens might have started off as a favourite in each of the first four matches she featured in, in that competition but she dished out enough consistency in her performances to win them.

And then in the final against Marie Bouzkova, where she had started off at 1/1 odds to capture the title, she came away a 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 winner over her Czech opponent.

This will be a different kettle of fish though what with Osaka belonging to a way higher pedigree of tennis. The only question here is if she can use Osaka’s rustiness to get past her.

Osaka v Stephens Prediction and Tip

While on paper Osaka is ranked way below Stephens, she will hold the edge here. Expecting a straight-set win for the Japanese player.
