Anheline Kalinina v Clara Burel Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in an event on the junior tour in Saint Malo, France in 2020, Burel winning in straight sets.

Kalinina Returns After Illness

Like all Ukrainian players, Kalinina is playing under the shadow just now of what is happening back in her homeland, although this may also give her inspiration to try even harder.

This will be the first time she has made the main draw in Indian Wells, having been knocked out in the qualifying competition in the last three years.

However, after a successful season last year on the ITF circuit in which she won four titles, she began the year by reaching a new career high ranking. Kalinina had a very mixed time in Australia – she lost twice in the first round in Melbourne, first in the Summer Set tournament and then in the Grand Slam itself, and that was sandwiched by a second round appearance in Adelaide

She then became ill and has just returned to competition.

Burel Makes Indian Wells Debut

Burel, a former junior world number one, who was the beaten finalist in two Grand Slams at that level, is making her Indian Wells debut.

She has spent most of her senior career so far on the ITF circuit, where she reached six finals in 2021, winning two of them, both on home ground in France.

This will be only her fifth match of the year so far, her season starting in Australia, where she reached the second round of the Melbourne Summer Set event before losing in three sets to the experienced German Andrea Petkovic.

However, she lost in the first round of the Australian Open and, in the only event she has played since then, an ITF tournament in France, she was beaten in the first round again.

She has not played for the last six weeks.

Kalinina v Burel Prediction and Tip

Kalinina will begin the favourite because of her greater experience at this level, and, being Ukrainian, she will have extra motivation to do well this year.
