Kaia Kanepi v Robin Montgomery Head to Head

Kaia Kanepi and Robin Montgomery have yet to play before this.

Kanepi Returns After Australian Open Heroics

Kaia Kanepi solidified her reputation as WTA’s slayer of the top stars. The big-hitting Estonian powered into her first Australian Open quarterfinal in January, shocking the likes of Angelique Kerber and the World No. 3 Aryna Sabalenka in the process.

Although Kanepi’s Melbourne adventure came to a halt against Iga Swiatek, the manner of her victories was a supreme way to round off a memorable fortnight Down Under.

At 36, and teetering outside the Top 100, not many people had given Kanepi a chance to make an imprint at the Australian Open. In an era that has been dominated by a lot of up-and-coming upstarts, it almost felt like Kanepi was on borrowed time.

But the Estonian veteran rolled back the years and produced that eye-catching run to the last eight against the odds. In doing so, she has re-entered the Top 100 (sitting comfortably at 63 in the rankings) – making the biggest jump of any player in the past month.

Montgomery Gets Wild Card At Home Tournament

Not long ago, Robin Montgomery was USA’s third-highest-ranked teenager in the WTA rankings, only surpassed by the sensation Coco Gauff and Amanda Anisimova. But she has since been overtaken in that regard by a few of her agemates.

Montgomery won’t be too fussed about losing that tag, as she looks to impress on home soil. The 17-year-old left-hander famously won the US Open junior’s titles in both singles and doubles last year – a distinction that was previously held by Lindsay Davenport from 1992.

Montgomery’s low ranking has been a major blow in her acceleration towards the top-level WTA competition. The young American was limited to play eight of her nine tournaments in 2021 on US soil.

Caution about traveling in the middle of a pandemic might also be another factor. Nevertheless, Montgomery should be happy to return to California for her main draw debut in Indian Wells.

Kanepi v Montgomery Prediction and Tip

Montgomery has the pace and foot speed to challenge Kanepi, who at 36, is certainly not the fastest woman. But Kanepi should have plenty of firepower in her locker not to entertain a lot of baseline exchanges.
