Qinwen Zheng v Vera Zvonareva Head to Head
Zheng and Zvonareva met at the Melbourne Summer Set 1 in January. The Chinese woman won that encounter in three sets – their only meeting thus far.

Zheng Extends ITF Dominance
Qinwen Zheng is one of the Chinese players of her generation. And three months in, this promises to be a breakout year for the 19-year-old from Wuhan.
Zheng has modeled her game to childhood idol Li Na, as she looks to champion a winning mentality to go hand-in-hand with her power-packed game. In 2022, the teenager has maintained her meteoric rise, reaching her first WTA semifinal at the Melbourne Summer Set 1 as a qualifier, losing to the eventual champion Simona Halep.
That defeat only served to give Zheng impetus to produce even better runs in her subsequent tournaments. She made her Grand Slam qualifying debut at the Australian Open before going on to reach the second. She managed to sustain that good form at the ITF tournament in Orlando where she won her eighth title at that level without dropping a set all week.
Those results catapulted in Zheng’s climb to inside the Top 100. With a 15-6 record for the season, the power-hitting Chinese teenager is a player to keep an eye on this coming fortnight.

Zvonareva Looks To Snap Losing Streak
Vera Zvonareva will have the odds stacked against her in the opening round of the BNP Paribas Open. She hasn’t won a match since the opening week of the WTA season in Australia when she defeated Alison Riske at the Melbourne Summer Set 1.
And with a 1-6 record coming to the California desert, hopes of a resurgence are looking bleak. Zvonareva will need a huge slice of luck and an incredible level of fitness to outsmart the talented Zheng on Wednesday.
The 37-year-old has plenty of fond memories to draw upon from the desert. She won the 2009 edition of the Indian Wells tournament, beating the likes of Petra Kvitova, Zheng’s idol Li Na, Caroline Wozniacki, Victoria Azarenka, and Ana Ivanovic in the final. As far as mission impossible goes, that is the closest thing to an improbable triumph.
The two-time Grand Slam finalist has already shown her steely resolve in spite of defeats. She pushed the likes of Elise Mertens and Ons Jabeur to three sets this season. Can Zvonareva get her season back on track at her happy hunting ground?
Zheng v Zvonareva Prediction and Tip
It was Zheng who kickstarted this minor slump in Melbourne that the Russian has found it increasingly difficult to shake off. I do expect the Chinese teenager to maintain her exuberant start to the season by banking another win.
Tip: Zheng to win in straight sets: 5/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
