Since winning her first round match at Melbourne Summer Set 1, Liu hasn’t won another main draw encounter, having played a further three tournaments.
And she very nearly wouldn’t have had the chance of winning another as she fell to a straight-set loss in the second round of qualifiers. Liu lost 7-5, 6-4 to Marta Kostyuk but still qualified as a lucky loser to set up a meeting with another qualifier.
Interestingly, given her record of making it to the main draw of competitions in recent times, Liu has managed to get through to her career-best ranking of 87th in the world.
With Liu having never made it past the first round in Indian Wells either, it would help her rankings immensely if she could win a round here.

Tomova Coming off First Main Draw Win of the Season
Another qualifier, Tomova needed to get through the defences of Astra Sharma to make it through to the main draw of Indian Wells Open this season.
The 111th-ranked Tomova won 6-4, 6-1 to cruise through, having earlier dropped just three games in her win against Elizabeth Mandlik.
The issue for Tomova is her record this year has not been much to write home about. Having never broken into the top 100 of the WTA Rankings in the past, Tomova won her only main draw encounter in Monterrey before falling in three sets to Elina Svitolina.
In the four WTA and one ITF competitions before that, Tomova failed to get past round one.
And while she does have more experience than her opponent here, Tomova will find it tough given her own struggles.
