Coric’s shoulder issue was much more extensive than the knee injury which sidelined him for up to three months in 2016. He experienced discomfort as early as 2018 and could not play through pain as he winded down 2020. Surgery was the only viable option for the 25-year-old who has since slipped to as low as No. 167 in the current ATP rankings.
The former World No. 12 has used a protected ranking to enter the main draw of the BNP Paribas Open. Coric memorably made the semifinals of this event in 2018.

Davidovich Fokina Suffered Dubai Heartbreak
The draws have not been kind towards Alejandro Davidovich Fokina whose half of his six defeats this season have all come against Top-10 opposition.
In Dubai, this past month, he held three match points against Jannik Sinner, but could not close out the young Italian and eventually fell in three sets. Defeat stung so hard that the 22-year-old took sufficient rest time of two weeks to digest and ponder.
Davidovich Fokina will get some respite at Indian Wells in his opening match. A returning Borna Coric who hasn’t played competitively for a year would be a welcome opener for the Spaniard. After all, he has played extremely well even in defeats this season.
Davidovich Fokina has overcome his own injury struggles this past year. The Spaniard dealt with a back injury that flared up just after the French Open.
