Pedro Martinez v Joao Sousa Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came on the clay courts of Marrakesh in 2018. Sousa had won that match in straight sets.

Martinez Coming off a Clay Title

24-year-old Martinez is a clay-court specialist and his record at all levels exhibits the same. Of the 11 Challenger and Future titles, 10 have come on clay, while as recently as last month the Spaniard won his first ever ATP title in Santiago – again on clay.

Three of the four matches he won in that tournament came against players who had gone into the encounter as a favourite.

The challenge for Martinez would be that transition he needs to make on to hard court surfaces, where his record is way more underwhelming. This year itself he has featured in only two hard court competitions, winning the first round at both before falling in the second.

What could work in Martinez’s favour as he looks to emulate his 2021 showing at the Indian Wells Masters by reaching the second round, is his opponent has had his struggles over the last few seasons as well.

Sousa Wins a Title Against the Run of Play

Sousa might have made it to the main draw as a lucky loser and he is no longer the powerhouse he once was as a top 30 player but he should be written off at one’s own peril.

This is because of his ability to shock and awe, and this was on ample display at Pune Open earlier this season.

Barring in the first round at that tournament where he was 1/20 to win the match against a local Indian player Arjun Kadhe, Sousa was the underdog in each of the remaining four encounters.

In fact in the final against Emil Ruusuvuori he started out at 4/1 to win the title and did that in three sets.

Sousa hasn’t done much of note otherwise this season though and it’s this inconsistency that makes it difficult to predict this one.

Martinez v Sousa Prediction and Tip

We could be looking at a Martinez win despite his preference for clay but the safer bet would be for him to win a set.

Tip: Martinez to win a set – Yes: 4/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
