While Medvedev hasn’t won a singles title yet this season, his form has been exemplary and has seen him take the pole position on the ATP Rankings chart.
Unfortunately for him, both his last two losses have come against a rampaging Rafael Nadal but other than that he has been quite unstoppable. The Russian did face some resistance on his way through to the final of Australian Open in what was one of his better performances but in the tournament that followed in Acapulco, life was a lot easier.
That was until he faced Nadal in the semifinal and fell to a straight-set loss.
What’s interesting to note here is Medvedev has never gone beyond the fourth round at Indian Wells Masters – his best having coming last year. And while he should not have too many difficulties against a player ranked outside the top 150, Medvedev would look to make a statement with this victory here.

Machac Overcomes Popyrin in Opener
Having to qualify for this event, the 21-year-old Machac showed great resolve in getting past Alexei Popyrin in the first round of this tournament on Wednesday.
The Czech, world number 158 won 6-3, 7-5 in an hour and 46 minutes to set up this meeting with the world number one.
Where he did score over his opponent despite his poor second serve points won, was his ability to hold his nerves at crucial times – Machac faced 14 break-points and saved 13 of them.
In response he got himself an equal number of break-points too and broke his opponent four times to ensure there was no stopping him.
Against Medvedev, things would look quite different but if Machac can put up a decent showing it could given him a boost going into the rest of the season.
