The two players have never met before on the WTA Tour.

Kerber Seeking Reprieve in Familiar Territory
World No. 16 Angelique Kerber is yet to win a WTA match this season although, she has played only two tournaments so far. At the Australian Open, she fell to Kaia Kanepi in the opener while in Doha, she slumped against Jil Teichmann in three sets.
In fact, her last commendable run on the tour came at the BNP Paribas Open itself in October when she made it to the quarterfinal. That performance neatly wrapped proved turned out to be a resurgent year for Kerber.
After struggling with the form for a fair bit of time, the 34-year-old German found some traction in her game in 2021. She won her first singles title in over three years and followed it with back to back semifinal stints in Wimbledon and Cincinnati Open.
Kerber also has a decent track record in the valley – while she is yet to go the distance, she has reached the penultimate rounds four times and was a runner-up here in 2019.

Zheng Makes her Indian Wells Debut
19-year-old Qinwen Zheng arrived in California with a fair bit of momentum. Her tally for the year stands at 15-4; her highlights include a semifinal feat in Melbourne 1 as a qualifier and an ITF title in Orlando.
Currently ranked World No. 74, Zheng made her WTA Tour only last season in Palermo – then ranking in the early 170s. In fact, at the start of the year, she was #287 and for her to come a long way in such a short period of time is certainly a commendable feat.
The Chinese player won an impressive three ITF titles over the season and is yet to lose an ITF final (8-8). While Zheng lacks main tour experience, she is proving to be a formidable adversary capable of packing punches.
In the opener here, she defeated Vera Zvonareva 6-3, 6-2 to book the match with Kerber.
Kerber v Zheng Prediction and Tip
Kerber, on paper, should win this match on account of her superior experience and an impressive pedigree that includes three Grand Slam wins. However, momentum is not on her side – something that Zheng seems to have in abundance at the moment.
Zheng makes for a good underdog bet and in all likelihood, this may prove to be a slogfest.
