Sonego Looking for First Win in Indian Wells
Lorenzo Sonego has had a roller coaster start to the season.
The World No. 21 had a decent start to the season down under, reaching the quarterfinals in Sydney and winning two rounds at the Australian Open for the first time. He then headed to the South American clay season, reaching the last eight in Cordoba and the final four in Buenos Aires, but bowing out of the second round in Rio.
Sonego, who has a better record on clay from his junior days, is a fast improving player on hard courts, but has lost back-o-back matches on the surface since making the Rio surface. First he went down to J.J. Wolf in Acapulco and then lost his Davis Cup singles match to Slovakia’s Filip Horansky.
A two-time champion on the tour, Sonego won the Cagliari title and finished runner-up in Eastbourne during a 30-24 season last year. He brings an 8-7 season record in what is his second Indian Wells appearance and will be looking to notch his first win in the tournament. The 26-year-old had received a first-round bye last year, but fell in his opening match to Kevin Anderson.

Bonzi Continues to Impress
Benjamin Bonzi was impressive last month and the Frenchman has carried that form to March, picking up a second career win at a Masters 1000 tournament on Friday.
Bonzi defeated countryman Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets to begin his first-ever Indian Wells campaign. In a one-hour-and-23-minute contest, Bonzi had a tough start as Rinderknech took a 0-2 lead, but the World No. 62 quickly found his footing, breaking Rinderknech twice in the first set to take a one-set lead and then got the sole break in the second to seal the match 6-3, 7-5.
The 25-year-old has now won 10 of the last 11 matches that he has played across levels. He was the Cherbourg Challenger tournament in February and then reached a first tour-level semifinal in Marseille, defeating Aslan Karatsev in the quarterfinals. His last win came over Cayetano March of Ecuador in the Davis Cup.
With the first-round win Bonzi improved to 7-5 at the tour-level and will be aiming for an upset win on Saturday.
Sonego v Bonzi Prediction and Tip
Given Bonzi’s form, Sonego won’t take it easy. Three sets seem imminent with Sonego edging past the Frenchman.
