Sorana Mihaela Cirstea v Anna Kalinskaya Head to Head

The pair have met once before, at the Western & Southern Open in 2020, Kalinskaya winning in straight sets.

Cirstea in Good Recent Form

Cirstea arrived in Indian Wells in good form, having reach the fourth round of the Australian Open and the semi-finals in Lyon.

She was given a bye in the first round, but was then drawn against Ajla Tomljanovic, the world number 39, and the top ranked Australian in California in the absence of Ashleigh Barty in the second, in a tough looking test, which she managed to pass.

She began badly though, dropping her first two service games, and, although she recovered one of those breaks, dropped her serve again. But then she won five games in a row to come from behind to take the first set.

The second set went with serve, until the pair swapped breaks in the middle of it. The Romanian had match point on the Tomljanovic serve, but, although that was saved, when the Australian served to stay in the match, Cirstea earned another match point, and this time she converted it.

She has now matched her best previous showing in this tournament.

Kalinskaya Upsets French Seed

Kalinskaya, who came through the qualifying competition, is again enjoying herself in California.

Having reached the fourth round in Indian Wells last October, and, after overcoming Harmony Tan of France in the first round, she upset Tan’s compatriot,  the number thirty three seed, Alize Cornet, to progress again.

It was a match of fluctuating fortunes, which began with both women dropping their serve. However, one more break was enough to give the Russian the set.

In the second set, though, her form suddenly deserted her, and Cornet swept through it without dropping a game.

But the pendulum swung back the other way when Cornet dropped her serve at the start of the third set, and then again six games later. That gave Kalinskaya the chance to serve out, which she gratefully accepted.

Cirstea v Kalinskaya Prediction and Tip

Cirstea is the higher ranked player and the seed, but Kalinskaya beat her in their one previous match, and has a particular penchant for this tournament.
