Alcaraz lost Andy Murray last season at this tournament last season, but he has only had to wait about six months to collect his first win at the California desert.
The young Spaniard, who has been a breath of fresh air since he burst onto the tour-level scene a couple of years ago, won 6-3 6-3 in an hour and 35 minutes. Alcaraz overcame a few jitters in the match in which he dropped two of his service games, but his power proved too much to handle for the counterpunching skills of McDonald.
The 18-year-old Alcaraz recently broke the world’s Top 20 for the first time in his career after a breathless start to his 2022 season. He improves to 9-1 for the year with victory over McDonald, and the only stain so far remains his third-round defeat to Matteo Berrettini at the Australian Open.

Bautista Agut Escapes J.J. Wolf In A Thriller
Roberto Bautista Agut had one foot out of the tournament but produced an incredible comeback to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
The 2022 Doha champion had a much tougher time in subduing the delightfully named American J.J. Wolf, in an instant classic in his second-round match.
Bautista Agut won 6-3 6-7 7-6 in a match that took three hours and 18 minutes to decide, which could have feasibly resulted in a Wolf victory.
Wolf had the match on his racket after playing superbly to haul himself in the match. But at 5-4 in the decider, he spurned a match point by producing a double fault at an inopportune moment and then wasted another by dragging a forehand wide.
The Spanish veteran made his opponent pay a hefty price. And in rubbing salt to the wound, he won the match in a third-set tiebreak.
Alcaraz v Bautista Agut Prediction and Tip
This has the makings of a really intriguing match. Bautista Agut could be walking on thin ice if there is a repeat of his second-rate performance against Wolf. Nonetheless, we are backing the younger Spaniard who is in the form of his life to emerge victorious.
