Berrettini Made to Work Hard by Rune

Matteo Berrettini was stretched by 18-year-old Danish qualifier Holger Rune in the second round of the Indian Wells Open on Sunday. The sixth seed needed two hours and four minutes and three sets to break the resolve of the determined teenager.

Berrettini broke early in the first set to take a 3-1 lead but the Dane got the break back a couple of games later only to see the Italian restore the advantage immediately. There were no more hiccups for the Italian who closed out the first set. The second set saw a determined Rune fight back into the contest. He eventually forced the decider by breaking Berrettini in the 10th game of the set.

Berretini, playing for the first time since pulling out of the first round of the Acapulco Open, took control of the third set after breaking the Dane in the third game and then never looked back to win 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. In all the Italian had 29 winners and 13 aces and made 19 unforced errors compared to Rune’s 5 aces, 26 winners and 23 unforced errors.

With the win, the World No. 6 improved to 8-5 for the season. A finalist at Wimbledon last year, the five-time tour-level champion had reached the semifinals of the Australian Open this year.

Berrettini will now be hoping to make the Round of 16 for the first time in Indian Wells.

Harris Finally Finds a Win

World No. 32 Lloyd Harris edged out Argentina’s Facindo Bagnis in the second round on Sunday.

Harris took the first set with ease, but Bagnis clawed his way back into the match. He broke Harris in the third game if the second and then saved five break points in the very next game to protect the advantage. There was no more drama in the second as Bagnis took it to third.

In the decider, Harris surged ahead with a break in the second game to take a 3-0 lead. The South African then had to save three break points in the seventh game before holding serve to make it 5-2. He had a match point saved by Bagnis in the next game but that didn’t matter much as the 25-year-old wrapped up the match 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in just under two hours. Harris hit 38 winners, including 15 aces. He saved four of five break points and converted three of 10.

The South African, who made it to the third round on his Indian Wells debut last year, had come into the tournament with a 1-6 record with his only win coming at the Davis Cup against 661st ranked Daniel Cukierman of Israel. He was knocked out of the first round from all the five tour-level events that he featured in and was also beaten by 343rd ranked Yshai Oliel in the reverse singles at the Davis Cup.

Berrettini v Harris Prediction and Tip

Harris is woefully out of touch this year. He will take a lot of confidence from the win over Bagnis, but will struggled against the class of Berrettini. Expect the Italian to pick up a straight sets win on Monday.
