Halep Eases Past Gauff
2015 champion Simona Halep put up a dominating performance against 18-year-old Cori Gauff to move into the fourth round of the Indian Wells Open for a sixth time in her career.
Unlike her second round match, where she was taken to three by Ekaterina Alexandrova, Halep wasn’t broken in the match against Gauff, as she saved all four break points that she faced during the contest. The Romanian herself had nine breaking chances and she capitalised on three of them for a 6-3, 6-4 win in an hour and 17 minutes.
The World No. 26 had needed an hour and 48 minutes to beat Alexandrova 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Halep, who bowed out of the third round last year, improved her season record to 13-3 with the win. The 30-year-old had won her 23rd tour-level title in Melbourne in January and was a semifinalist in Dubai. She will be looking to reach the quarterfinals a fifth time in Indian Wells.

Cirstea Eliminates Kalinskaya
Sorana Cirstea lost the first set against Anna Kalinskaya in the third round on Sunday but the 26th seed made a resounding comeback dropping just one game in the next two sets to roll into the fourth round at Indian Wells for the first time in what is her 10th appearance.
The 31-year-old Romanian, who beat Ajla Tomljanović 6-4, 7-5 in the second round, needed two hours and 19 minutes to beat Kalinskaya 5-7, 6-1, 6-0. Cirstea looked in trouble in the initial exchanges, having to save four break points in the very first game of the match. She lost serve in the fifth game but got the break back in the very next game, but the World No. 90 surged ahead once again in the 11th game and then held serve to take the first set.
Cirstea was broken again in the first game of the second set, but the Romanian wasn’t going down easily. She didn’t lose another game in the match and won 12 consecutive games to knock out her opponent.
The World No. 27 is now 11-6 for the season, which includes a semifinal appearance in Lyon in February.
