Alcaraz Stuns Bautista Agut

Carlos Alcaraz stunned compatriot Roberto Bautista Agut with a rip-roaring performance on Monday. While the defeat may not be a surprise as the 18-year-old 19th seed is the up-and-coming star of the sport, but the scoreline was a shocker as the World No. 19 needed just 65 minutes to beat the World No. 15, 6-2, 6-0.

Dominating the contest from start to finish, Alcaraz converted five of nine break points and saved the only one that he faced in the match. One stat that stood out during the match between the Davis Cup teammates was the number of winners. While Alcaraz had 30 of them, Bautista Agut could hit just two.

Alcaraz’s stunning performance against the more experience, higher-ranked pro saw him win 66% (57 of 87) of all point in the match.

The win means Alcaraz is now unbeaten in the last eight matches. He has lost just one match this year and that was a tough five-set defeat to Matteo Berrettini in the third round of the Australian Open. Since then he lifted his first ATP 500 title and a second ATP career title in Rio and won his Davis Cup singles match against Romania.

At Indian Wells, Alcaraz began his campaign with a straight forward 6-3, 6-3 win against the United States’ Mackenzie McDonald in the second round.

He made heads turn with a quarterfinal appearance at the U.S. Open on his main draw debut last year, now he is one win away from his first Masters 1000 quarterfinal. Can he get to it on Tuesday?

Monfils Upsets the Top Seed

Facing Alcaraz will be 35-year-old French showman, Gael Monfils, who toppled top seed Daniil Medvedev in a sensational come-from-behind win on Monday.

The result means Medvedev will now lose his No. 1 ranking on Monday and hand it back to Novak Djokovic after being on top for just two weeks. He will have the opportunity to claim it back in Miami, if he makes the semifinals of that tournament.

Monfils, who had started the year brilliantly by winning the Adelaide International title and reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, had a quiet February falling in the first round in Montpellier in his only match of the month. But he seems to have regained his touch at Indian Wells and that was on display on Monday, when despite a shaky start he made a roaring comeback against the top seed.

Medvedev won 11 consecutive points to close out the first set and then had a break point saved in the first game of the second. Monfils managed to win the first game and then the tide began to turn. Monfils broke to go 3-1 up but lost serve immediately in the next game with Medvedev converting a fifth break point in the game. The Frenchman, however, got another break a couple of games later, closing out the set by winning three games in a row.

It was all Monfils from there on as the World No. 28 raced to a 4-0 lead in the third before Medvedev finally one a game after losing seven on the trot. monfils broke again in the last game of the match, converting a sixth match point in the game for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win in two hours and six minutes.

This was Monfils’ second win over a World No. 1, having beaten Rafael Nadal in 2009.

A two-time quarterfinalist at Indian Wells, Monfils had begun his challenge with an easy 6-3, 6-4 win over Serbia’s Filip Krajinovic.

Alcaraz v Monfils Prediction and Tip

It promises to be an exciting match-up between the rising, young Spaniard and the veteran Frenchman. Both have hit top form in Indian Wells and therefore this match could go the distance. Expect the red-hot Alcaraz to continue his unbeaten streak by edging past Monfils.
