Paula Badosa v Veronika Kudermetova Head to Head

Badosa has never been able to defeat Kudermetova in all their past encounters. The Russian holds a 3-0 lead over the Spaniard, beating her twice in the 2021 season.

Badosa, Yet to Lose a Set

Defending champion Paula Badosa has done well to commence her title defence on a solid note. With a bye into round two, the number five seed has so far dispatched the likes of Tereza Martincova, Sara Sorribes Tormo, and Leylah Fernandez without dropping a single set.

This is an impressive performance from the 24-year-old whose form seemed to have taken a slight hit in the last few events. Following a fourth-round stint in the Australian Open, she fell in the opening match in Dubai and then to Cori Gauff in the third round of the Qatar Open.

That said, Badosa did win the Sydney Classic at the start of the season by dismissing Belinda Bencic, Daria Kasatkina, and Barbora Krejcikova.

Currently ranked World No. 7, Badosa continues to build on the spectacular 2021 season that saw her win the Indian Wells Open and Belgrade Open, in addition to cracking the top 10 and reaching the end-rounds in the Madrid Open, Cincinnati Open, French Open, and the year-end WTA Finals.

Kudermetova, Ready to Make her Case

World No. 24 Veronika Kudermetova seems primed to leave her mark on the tour this season. With two finals already in 2022 (Melbourne 1 and WTA Dubai), the 24-year-old has worked hard to move up in the rankings and compete among the elites.

Her journey in the valley has been more or less a seamless one; in the first two matches, Kudermetova did not have to work that hard as she made quick work of Naomi Osaka (6-0, 6-4), and Marie Bouzkova (6-4, 2-0 retired).

In the round of 16, however, the doubles world number six had to work hard. Facing Marketa Vondrousova, she prevailed in three sets with 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 7-5.

Kudermetova has an impressive pedigree on singles and doubles tours that make her a formidable player.

With Elise Mertens, she won the Dubai Championships doubles and was a runner-up in Doha. Last year in Tennis Paradise, she also made it to the final with Elena Rybakina but had to settle for the finalist silverware.

Badosa v Kudermetova Prediction and Tip

While Badosa will start as the odds-on favourite, Kudermetova will fancy her prospects of reaching the semis. After all, she leads 3-0 against the Spaniard and has been in decent form this season. This is likely to be a close encounter that can swing either way.
