Iga Swiatek v Simona Halep Head to Head

Halep holds a slim, 2-1 lead over Swiatek last defeating her in the Australian Open 2021 in three sets. This upcoming meeting will be their second one on the hard courts.

Halep Makes Quick Work of her Opponents

Former world number one Simona Halep has absolutely brushed aside her competition at the BNP Paribas Open. The number 24 seed incurred a slight hiccup in her opening-round match with Ekaterina Alexandrova but prevailed ultimately with 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Thereafter it was a seamless, straight-set journey for the Romanian to the elite four. Halep next defeated Cori Gauff 6-3, 6-4 and followed it with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Sorana Cirstea.

In the quarterfinal, the 30-year-old served two breadsticks to Petra Martic with 6-1, 6-1 in what was her biggest win of the season.

Considering that Halep was plagued with injuries and the consequent recovery for most of the last year, she has done well to recapture some of the lost form. She won the Melbourne Set 1 in January and followed it with a round of 16 appearance in the Australian Open.

In Dubai, the two-time Grand Slam winner made it to the semis but fell to Jelena Ostapenko. Nonetheless, with her incomparable experience and an outstanding pedigree, she will fancy her chances against Swiatek.

Swiatek in her Fourth Semifinal of 2022

20-year-old Iga Swiatek started the year as World No. 9 – she now finds herself in the top five as the number four player. Following her performance over the last two weeks in Tennis Paradise, she is primed to become No. 2 when the new ranking list is released on Monday.

The Pole achieved this phenomenal feat after reaching the semifinal in three big events – WTA 500 in Adelaide, the Melbourne Slam, and in the Qatar Non-Mandatory where she won the title.

In these heroics, Swiatek has already booted a litany of formidable players like Leylah Fernandez, Victoria Azarenka, Aryna Sabalenka, Maria Sakkari, and Anett Kontaveit. At Indian Wells, she has only built on this further.

Although Swiatek had to come back after losing the first set, it didn’t deter her from making the statement wins. In the opener, she knocked out Anhelina Kalinina 5-7, 6-0, 6-1, and tracked similar wins over Clara Tauson (6-7(3), 6-2, 6-1) and Angelique Kerber (4-6, 6-2, 6-3).

In the quarterfinal, where another three-setter was likely against the resurgent American Madison Keys, Swiatek turned up the heat with 6-1, 6-0.

Swiatek v Halep Prediction and Tip

Both players are coming off a great run and big wins in the quarterfinal. Halep has the advantage of being the mature one while Swiatek is rippling with energy, confidence, and momentum.

Swiatek can come out as the winner but it is not likely to be an easy feat for her.
