She made a solid start in 2022, but has seen a dip in form over the last three tournaments. Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu is on a four-match losing streak and will be desperate to get back to winning ways in Miami.
A four-time champion and four-time finalist on the tour, Begu last reached a final in Cleveland during a 17-15 season last year, falling to Anett Kontaveit in the title clash.
The 31-year-old began the 2022 season well, reaching the quarterfinals of Melbourne Summer Set, by beating top seed Jessica Pegula en route. She then fell in the second round at the Australian Open to Elise Mertens before making it to the final four in St. Petersburg. But a defeat in the semifinal to Maria Sakkari started a series of four consecutive losses. Begu lost her opening matches in Dubai, Qatar and Indian Wells.
She will be making her ninth appearance in Miami, where she has gone past the second round just twice, with 2016 being her best when she went as far as the Round of 16.

Baptiste Looking to Win First WTA 1000 Match
Twenty-year-old Hailey Baptiste will be featuring in just her third WTA 1000 tournament. She made her debut as a qualifier at the Miami Open last year, but suffered a tough three-set loss to another qualifier Kristina Kucova in the first round.
She also featured at the Indian Wells Open this year as a wild card, but yet again went down in three, this time to Ajla Tomljanovic. Can she win her first WTA 1000 match in Miami?
Baptista, who won her first Grand Slam match at the French Open last year, also won her first match on her Australian Open debut this year, beating Caroline Garcia in three, but she lost in the second round to Maddison Inglis.
Currently ranked No. 122, the promising American had peaked to a career-high ranking of 119 earlier this month. She will be aiming to break into the top 100 soon and will look to take another step towards that feat in Miami.
Begu v Baptiste Prediction and Tip
Begu’s experience gives her the edge in this contest. Expect the Romanian to end her four-match skid by making a winning start in Miami and setting up a second round matchup with top seed Aryna Sabalenka.
