Yulia Putintseva will be happy to see the red dirt of Europe after several weeks of disappointing results on hard courts. The player from Kazakhstan is a capable player on hard courts yet her best tennis has always come on clay and she will be happy to get this part of the season over with.
She is desperately looking for wins as she was able to score only one in Indian Wells recently with her loss coming in round 2 against Golubic. That was a crazy match where Putintseva actually had a very good chance to win it but faltered towards the end.
It’s not going to be very good for her confidence but she had a solid draw her and if she can overcome a teenager in round one she might get a few wins here.

Big Event debut for Schunk
Mariana Schunk is an unknown commodity on the WTA tour as the teenager from Germany did not have many chances to play with the best in the world. A wild card entry here allows her to make her debut in Miami and it’s a chance for her to test her level against some of the best.
Schunk has a 9-7 record this year but the majority of these matches were played on the ITF tour. Schunk certainly has the talent to be in the top 100 but getting there will require some serious heavy lifting from her as she is firmly ranked outside the top 200.
Puttintseva is a very good opponent for her as she plays somewhat of a different style to most women on the tour. IF she can handle that it should give her a lot of confidence moving forward. 2022 will be a pivotal year for her either way and a good run here might just get it started.
Putintseva v Schunk Prediction and Tip
With all being said I think that Putintiseva will win this match. Yes, there will be some unknown elements with the teenager that might catch her off guard but the player from Kazakhstan is well equipped to deal with that. Her level has not been high this year but it was good enough to defeat solid players before.
There is a chance that this match goes to three sets simply because of the unfamiliarity between opponents but anything but a Putintseva win would shock me quite a bit. I think she does it comfortably in two sets but be aware that things might go sideways.
