Soonwoo Kwon v Brandon Nakashima Head to Head

64th-ranked Kwon and 79th-ranked Nakashima have not played each other before this.

Kwon Suffers Suprise Defeat To Djere

Big things were expected of Soonwoo Kwon in 2022 following his breakout year on the ATP tour last season. The energetic South Korean won his maiden ATP title on the indoor hard courts of Nur Sultan, placing that trophy next to his Biella 3 Challenger crown he won earlier during the 2021 season.

But it looks he has caught the second-season syndrome that seems to affect some of tennis’ newest stars who performed well beyond their capabilities in their first full season on the main tour.

The 24-year-old is yet to advance beyond the second round at an ATP tournament this season, posting a 7-8 record for the season coming to the Miami Masters. But it is pertinent to note that three of Kwon’s eight defeats have come against Andrey Rublev – an established top-tenner for that matter.

Kwon’s most recent loss to Laslo Djere was the most surprising result of his season thus far. Djere, who is hardly a hard court threat, rallied from a set down to beat the South Korean at his own game and might have planted a dagger in Kwon’s confidence.

Nakashima Far From His Best

This was not the kind of season many had envisaged of Brandon Nakashima, or at least after that quarterfinal appearance in Syndey in the early weeks of 2022. He hasn’t won back-to-back matches since that event and comes to the Miami Masters on the back of one win from five matches.

Not even a return to the Challenger Tour rekindled his season. Nakashima was soundly beaten by Emil Rusuuvori in Phoenix a week ago, and his 2022 season has been a story of frustration and stalled progress.

Currently ranked 79th in the world rankings, Nakashima was destined to make his mark on the ATP’s biggest stages. Last season, he won a pair of ATP Challenger titles and finished runner-up in tour-level finals in Los Cabos and Atlanta. He would also qualify for the Next Gen ATP Finals in Milan where he made the last four.

Nakashima, however, is yet to carry that momentum into the new season. Can a return to Miami spark him into life?

Kwon v Nakashima Prediction and Tip

Given how fast they set the pace amongst themselves in 2021, both Kwon and Nakashima’s are on pedestrian levels in 2022. It is a tough call as neither of them is playing really well on current form, which is why we are going with the games market here.
