Angelique Kerber v Naomi Osaka Head to Head

Kerber has a 4-1 lead against Osaka, but the two haven’t met since the WTA Finals in 2018.

Kerber Faces a Tough Opener

World No. 15 Angelique Kerber hasn’t played much this season. The German began with disappointing opening round defeats at the Australian Open and the Qatar Open before finally registering her first win of the season in Indian Wells.

Kerber defeated Qinwen Zheng and Daria Kasatkina en route the Round of 16, but was stalled from further progress by Iga Swiatek, who rallied from a set down to advance. The Pole went all the way to win the title.

This will be Kerber’s 12th appearance in Miami. The three-time major champion was a semifinalist in 2016 and lost in the last eight stage on three occasions. Last year, the German left-hander went down to Victoria Azarenka in the third round.

Kerber, who had seen a dip in form in 2020, regained her form last year, picking up her 13th tour-level title in Bod Homburg and also making a move up the rankings. It will be an interesting contest against Osaka. She has dominated the rivalry and would look to extend the lead.

Osaka Breezes Past Sharma

Heckled in Indian Wells, Naomi Osaka made a tearful exit after suffering a tough loss against Veronika Kudermetova in the second round.

Nothing seemed to bother her in her opener in Miami, as the World No. 77 eased into the second round with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Australia’s Astra Sharma.

Osaka didn’t face a single break point against the World No. 96, while she had 11 opportunities to break the Australian’s serve. The Japanese broke Sharma once in each set to wrap up the contest in an hour and 20 minutes.

A four-time major winner, Osaka is making her fifth appearance in Miami. She delivered best result in the tournament last year, reaching the quarterfinals before falling to Maria Sakkari.

The former No. 1, who took a break from tennis last year due to mental health issues, has slid down considerably in the rankings. She came into the tournament with a 6-2 record in 2022, which included a run to the semifinals in Melbourne, but she had to withdraw from the final four clash without even taking the court.

In her next assignment, she made the third round at the Australian Open and then endured a tough loss in the second round at Indian Wells, after winning her opener.

Kerber v Osaka Prediction and Tip

Three sets seem imminent in this contest. Kerber will be a slight favourite given her superior head-to-head record.
