At her best, Mertens had reached a WTA ranking of 12th in the world, and while doing so she had reached 10 finals on the WTA circuit in a span of three and a half years. Mertens had won six of them.
In more recent times, however, Mertens has failed to recapture similar form and as a result, she has won just nine matches this season spread across six tournaments.
Two weeks ago, with a first round bye in Indian Wells, Mertens had managed to clinch the second round encounter against Marta Kortyuk. However, in the the third, Mertens fell to the unheralded Aussie, Daria Saville to bow out of the competition.
Come the Miami Open, she has another first round bye and while she kick-starts the action against a player who has never been ranked inside the top 250, she would hope to get going in a manner that gives her the confidence for the latter rounds.

Fruhvirtova Wins Maiden WTA 1000 Match
She was just 15 when she won her first ever match on the WTA circuit and now a year on, Fruhvirtova has already registered her maiden victory in a WTA 1000 tournament.
Entering the Miami Open as a wild-card entrant, Fruhvirtova was 11/10 to win her opener, defying the odds to carve out a 6-0, 6-4 rout of Danka Kovinic. This came on the back of a title win on the ITF circuit in February, which was followed by a first round defeat on the same circuit and a qualifier loss in Indian Wells.
What needs to now be seen is whether the Czech teenager Fruhvirtova can find herself a chance to upset her seeded opponent’s apple-cart. Or at least run Mertens close in this second round match.
