Ludmilla Samsonova lost to an inspired Petra Martic in the fourth round at Indian Wells this past week. That result meant that Samsonova’s run to the quarterfinals in Adelaide in January remains her best showing of 2022.
The Russian power hitter produced a brilliant year on the WTA tour last season. She won her maiden WTA title on the lawns in Berlin as a qualifier. Samsonova also notched multiple wins over Top 20 players during the course of the season.
Currently sitting at a career-high ranking of No. 30, Samsonova has found it difficult to continue in the same vein of form. She is 6-6 for the year and has lost five matches against opponents ranked lower than her in the WTA rankings.
The 23-year-old will have plenty of room to adjust and acclimatize to the new season. She reached the third round of the Maimi Open as a qualifier on her tournament debut last season. But she returns to Florida a completely different player, both in terms of status and accomplishments.

Brengle Overwhelms Teenager Eala
Madison Brengle, as predicted, did not even need to get out of first gear. She dismissed the Filipina teenager Alex Eala for the loss of only three games in an hour and 13 minutes.
Wins have been hard to come by for the experienced American in 2022. And her record at the Miami Open down the years does not inspire one bit. Yet, the draw handed her the most routine of openers against the 16-year-old who only entered the tournament as a wild card and with very little experience at the top level.
Brengle earned three successive service breaks to take an unassailable 5-0 lead before she wrapped up the first set 6-2 in 36 minutes. In the second set, Eala was floored as Brengle showed the gulf in rankings and class between the two players, breaking the youngster four more times to round off a straight-set victory.
Consequently, with that win, Brengle has ended her five-year wait for a main draw win at the Miami Open.
Samsonova v Brengle Prediction and Tip
Brengle cruised into the second round, but her serve remains a glaring weakness that even a 16-year-old Eala butchered it at times. That could spell bad news when she takes on a powerful and aggressive hitter in Samsonova.
