His shock loss at the hands of JJ Wolf in the first round in Indian Wells notwithstanding, Sonego has maintained a world ranking of 22 after being at his career-best of 21st on the charts.
Sonego had earlier started off the season with a quarterfinal appearance in Sydney and followed that up with a third round appearance at Australian Open. However, his performances have slid after that with the Italian failing to string together any kind of performances to watch.
A semifinal appearance on the clay courts of Buenos Aires has been his only strong performance of note, which was followed by four successive defeats including one in the Davis Cup.
The Italian is coming off a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Benjamin Bonzi in the second round of Indian Wells Masters. Can he break this losing streak and get going at Miami where he had made the fourth round last season?

Qualifier Kudla Made to Sweat
Juncheng Shang is ranked 365th in the world but made Kudla fight for virtually every point before the latter came through in three sets to make the second round.
Kudla overcame the loss of the first set tie-breaker to carve out a 6-7 (3), 7-5, 6-4 win over his Chinese opponent.
In a match lasting nearly three hours, Kudla was broken four times as compared to the six times that he managed to get past Shang’s serve. He had a chance to serve out the first set at 5-4 but went on to fritter that away before losing it in the tie-breaker.
He then lost his serve at 4-4 only to break back two times to level the proceedings before exchanging four breaks of serve in the third set. At 4-5, however, Shang failed to hold his serve and Kudla came through in three to seal his second round berth.
Sonego could prove to be too good for the American.

Sonego should not have a lot of difficulties in getting past Kudla but will this be as straightforward as a straight-set win? One cannot be sure.
