After making a solid start to the season, Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta has seen a dip in form. The World No. 19 will be hoping to regain his touch quickly as he prepares for his first appearance in Miami since his straight sets loss to Alexander Zverev in the semifinals in 2018.
The Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist brings an 8-5 season record to what will be his sixth Miami Open campaign.
He began the season with four wins on the trot at the ATP Cup, but lost his singles match in the final against Canada. The two-time U.S. Open semifinalist added three more wins at the Australian Open, before falling to Matteo Berrettini in the Round of 16. Since then the form’s been dodgy for the 30-year-old.
He lost his opening match in Rio to Fabio Fognini, won one and lost one in Acapulco and then suffered a shock second-round defeat to compatriot Jaume Munar in the Round of 64 at Indian Wells.
One win from the last five matches will concern the Spaniard, who will be under a bit of pressure on Friday.

Goffin Ousts Carballés Baena
Facing Carreno Busta will be a player who has himself been struggling on the tour, and that too for an extended period of time. But a rare win on Thursday, would have been a huge confidence booster for David Goffin.
The Belgian began his 10th Miami Open campaign with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Spain’s Roberto Carballés Baena. Goffin was very dominant in the first set, not facing a break point and converting two to take a one-set lead. He conceded a break early in the second but recovered quickly with a double break to take the match in an hour and 27 minutes.
The win improved that 31-year-old to 6-8 for the season.
A semifinalist in Miami in 2015, the Belgian, who has seen a steady decline in the rankings over the last two years, is currently placed at No. 70. But having started well in Miami, he will be looking to claw his way back towards the top.
Carreno Busta v Goffin Prediction and Tip
It’s a matchup that’s produced a couple of engaging matches in the past. Could be an interesting one as Goffin’s hit form and Carreno Busta is struggling a bit at the moment. However, the Spaniard will still be expected to advance.
