Taylor Fritz v Mikhail Kukushkin Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, at Los Cabos in 2017, and in Chengdu a year later, Fritz winning on both occasions.

Fritz Resumes after Indian Wells Stunner

Fritz, who had a first round bye, comes to Miami still basking in the warm glow of having won by far the biggest title of his career, the Indian Wells Masters, where he ended Rafael Nadal’s unbeaten run in 2022 in the final.

In fact, that was only his second ever senior title, the first coming back in 2019 in Eastbourne, and it has boosted him to his highest ever career ranking.

His exploits in California were not totally unexpected – he ended 2021 by reaching the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters, and began this year by reaching the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time at the Australian Open.

He reached the fourth round in Miami last year, and will be aiming to at least match that this time.

Qualifier Kukushkin Registers Shock Win

Kukushkin has been appearing in Miami since 2009 and, in all that time, he has never been further than the second round – something he has emulated this year.

Once a top forty player, his ranking has dropped significantly in the past three years, and he now plays predominantly on the Challenger Tour, except when he is able to enter ATP main draws via qualifying, the route that he took in Florida this year.

There he overcame Radu Albot of Moldova in three sets, and then Shintano Mochizuki of Japan.

He went into his first round match with Boric van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands, the world number 42, a clear underdog, but despite being the first man to drop his serve, he levelled straight away, and another break earned him the first set.

Then he engineered another break in the second set, and served out for the match.

Fritz v Kukushkin Prediction and Tip

Provided that Fritz has now come down to earth after the euphoria of Indian Wells, he should beat a man ranked 146 places below him in the world, and who he has defeated in their two previous meetings.

Tip: Fritz to win in straight sets: 10/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
