Cori Gauff v Zhang Shuai Head to Head
This will be a first meeting between the two.

No. 14 seed Cori Gauff made a solid start to her third Miami Open campaign, scoring a straight sets win over China’s Qiang Wang and getting her Australian Open revenge. Wang had knocked out the 18-year-old in the first round of the opening major this year. And she made things difficult for the World No. 17 in the second round at Miami as well, but Gauff found a way to eke out a win in an hour and 40 minutes.
Gauff raced to a 5-2 lead in the first set, thanks to a break in the second game, but she found it difficult to close out the set as Wang made a comeback, winning three games in a row. Gauff, however got her act together and edged the first set with a break in the last game.
In the second set, both started well, holding serve over the first five games but neither could hold again in the match as it ended with five consecutive breaks. Gauff got three of those breaks to win 7-5, 6-4 and advance into the third round in Miami for the first time.
The win improved the American to 9-6 this season. A two-time tour-level champion, Gauff was a semifinalist in Adelaide-2 and a quarterfinalist in Qatar this year. It will be interesting to see of she can beat another Chinese in the tournament to progress into the fourth round.

Zhang Stuns Cirstea
Facing Gauff in the third round is Zhang Shuai, who decimated No. 24 seed Sorana Cirstea in Round 2.
Having begun the tournament with a win over Denmark’s Clara Tauson, who retired while trailing 1-2 in the third set, Zhang looked in terrific touch against the Romanian in the second, demolishing her 6-1, 6-1 in just 55 minutes.
The Chinese, who picked up her third WTA title in Lyon earlier this year, was broken once by Cirstea, but she converted six of 14 break points and won 56 of 83 total points in a dominating second round display.
This is the second time in her 10th attempt that the 33-year-old will be featuring in the third round in Miami. The World no. 43 has made five first round exits this year. It’s only the third tournament, after a third round exit in the Australian Open and the title in Lyon, where she has won matches in the main draw this year.
Gauff v Zhang Prediction and Tip
With Zhang in form things will be a tad difficult for the Gauff, but the American will still be the favourite to advance into the fourth round.
