Lloyd Harris v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, at the Cincinnati Masters last year, Harris winning easily in straight sets.

Harris Finding Some Overdue Form

Harris had endured a desperate start to the year, and he had not won s singles match on tour until he beat the Argentine Facundo Bagnis in three sets in the first round of Indian Wells. He was beaten then by Matteo Berrettini in the second round, but his confidence was given a much needed boost because, when he met Bagnis again in the first round in Miami, he beat him in straight sets this time.

And the South African number one will be feeling a lot better about life after knocking out the world number 14, Denis Shapovalov of Canada, in the second round on Sunday.

He struck the first blow by breaking the Shapovalov serve in the third game of the match and, although the Canadian got it back on level terms, two further breaks gave Harris the set.

The pair swapped breaks midway through the second set, and then Shapovalov found himself serving to stay in the match. Harris earned one match point, Shapovalov got it back to deuce, but when a second match point came along, the South African converted it.

Qualifier Nishioka Battling Through

Nishioka has had his own recent struggles with form, and was on the verge of dropping out of the top 100, before enjoying a mini-revival.

Forced to qualify in Miami, he saw off the challenge of both Egor Gerasimov and then Christopher Eubanks of the USA, both in straight sets, to earn himself a first-round tie with another qualifier, Emilio Gomez of Ecuador.

The Japanese breezed through the first set against the world number 145, but dropped the second after a tie-break, before reasserting his control of the match in the third.

In the second round, he faced Dan Evans of Great Britain, the world number 27, and it was the British player who took the first set courtesy of two breaks.

However, the pendulum shifted Nishioka’s way when he broke the Evans’ serve early in the second set, and he was able to consolidate that to level the match.

Evans dropped his serve again at the start of the third set, but responded with a break of his own, before Nishioka broke him once more.

The man from Japan underlined his victory with one further break.

Harris v Nishioka Prediction and Tip

Both men have played themselves into some sort of form in Miami, but given that Harris won their one previous encounter comfortably less than a year ago, he will start favourite to do so again.
