Iga Swiatek v Naomi Osaka Head to Head

This will only be their second meeting on the WTA Tour; the first one came in the 2019 Rogers Cup where Osaka won in straight sets.

Osaka Back in her Element

World No. 77 Naomi Osaka will be pleased with how she has fared in Miami over the fortnight. After losing 0-6, 4-6 to Veronika Kudermetova early in Indian Wells last month, the young Japanese has done well to turn the tables.

This upcoming final is set to be Osaka’s first such feat since the Australian Open last year – she won that tournament after beating Jennifer Brady in straight sets.

Since then, she has not played a whole lot of tennis; the 24-year-old chose to focus on her mental health and took a brief hiatus off the tour. As a result, she dropped out of the top 50.

Nonetheless, it has been a positive start to the season for Osaka as she continues to build on her semifinal stint in Melbourne and a third-round run in the Slam.

Over the last two weeks or so, the former world number one has knocked out Astra Sharma, Angelique Kerber, Karolina Muchova, Alison Riske, Danielle Collins, and Belinda Bencic. In fact, until she ran into Bencic, Osaka had not lost a set here.

With a remarkable history of winning big events, she will fancy her chances over Swiatek and hope to mark her return to the sport in style.

Swiatek, Moving to a Sunshine Doubles

Iga Swiatek will soon find herself where her adversary was not too long ago. She will take the #1 mantle on Monday and has got a good opportunity to celebrate her new success in style.

The 20-year-old is in the form of her life; she is 25-3 as of this week for the season and has gone unbeaten in her last 16 matches. More impressively, the Pole has lost a set in only four of those.

She won the Qatar Open in February, dismissing Maria Sakkari, Aryna Sabalenka, and Anett Kontaveit en route to the trophy. Then in Indian Wells, she added the likes of Angelique Kerber, Simona Halep, Madison Keys, and Clara Tauson to that list to win her second WTA 1000 title.

In Miami, Swiatek has continued in the same vein as she defeated Viktorija Golubic, Madison Brengle, Cori Gauff, Petra Kvitova, and Jessica Pegula without as much as breaking a sweat.

Swiatek v Osaka Prediction and Tip

This is an evenly-matched affair that can swing either way. Osaka is slightly more experienced and has got a much better pedigree while Swiatek is soaring high on momentum and looks absolutely unstoppable.

Both players have a big serve and enjoy a great service game; this one may very well extend to three sets before we see a champion. Nonetheless, we might be looking at the start of a great rivalry.
