Paul In Good Form
World No. 37 Tommy Paul has been in good form this year. It’s a season when he has constantly made deep runs in the tournaments that he has featured in.
The best so far this year was a semifinal appearance in Delray beach. The 24-year-old, who is 14-7 in 2022, was also a quarterfinalist in Adelaide-1, Adelaide-2 and Acapulco.
In the big tournaments, he made a second round exit from the Australian Open, but reached the third rounds of the Indian Wells and the Miami Opens. One of his biggest accomplishments of the season was a win over World no. 3 Alexander Zverev in Indian Wells. He also beat Matteo Berretini in Acapulco for another top 10 win but that victory came after the Italian withdrew from teh contest.
The 24-year-old had a decent 2021 season, capping it off by securing his maiden ATP title in Stockholm
As far as his record on clay is concerned, Paul is 11-12 on the surface and was a semifinalist in Parma last season. Although he prefers playing on hard courts, he has a reached two final on clay at the Challenger level, winning one of those titles.
He returns to the main draw in Houston for the first time since his debut in 2016 and would be hoping to improve the 1-1 tournament record.

It’s Been a Year of Struggle for Gojowczyk
He started the year with five consecutive first-round losses before making the main draw in Acapulco as a lucky loser.
Peter Gojowczyk then claimed his first main draw win of the season, with a stunning straight sets win over Brandon Nakashima in the first round and then got lucky again after his second round opponent Alexander Zverev was expelled from the tournament. The German ran out of luck in the last eight stage, receiving a 1-6, 0-6 thrashing from Cameron Norrie.
Ranked No. 100 in the world, the 32-year-old failed to qualify in Miami.
Gojowczyk had produced his best grand slam result at the U.S. Open last year, reaching the fourth round of the tournament. He was also a semifinalist in Metz. But when it comes to clay courts, the German doesn’t have a great record. He is 7-15 over his career and last won a main draw match on the surface in 2019.
