Christian Garin v Jack Sock Head to Head
They played once before and Sock was able to win that 2017 Wimbledon match with 6-3 4-6 7-6(4) 6-3.

Injuries Troubling Garin
Christian Garin has not played a lot of tennis in 2022 and the little he has played has not been very good. It’s mostly due to his shoulder injury that keeps troubling him despite a lengthy rehab process. It got so bad over the South American clay season that a tearful Garin admitted he is unsure whether he will continue playing tennis.
While retirement is an option, Garin has opted to push through for the time being but the struggles are still there. He lost in the 2nd round of the Miami Open to Pedro Martinez and he did not play a very good match. It’s going to be interesting to see what the switch to clay does for Garin once more but it’s not looking promising.
His last victory came all the way back at the Australian Open and since then Garin has lost 5 matches in a row. Houston should be a decent event for him but if the injuries keep playing a factor it’s hard to see anything changing.

Sock Healthy and Playing Again
Jack Sock has had his share of health struggles in the past with the American missing a lot of time since breaking out a few years ago. Sock was playing superb tennis but after that, his body simply could not keep up. It seems as though it’s finally back to a usable level and it’s reflected in his play.
Some strong doubles runs, some solid singles wins and Sock is enjoying life on Tour once more. An 8-6 record on the year is pretty okay but the American can do much better. Houston will be an interesting event for him as he will get to test himself on clay a little bit.
It’s not his favourite surface yet this clay is quite different from the typical one. He will play at home so that should give him further motivation.
Garin v Sock Prediction and Tip
So this is an interesting matchup between two players who are in very different moods at the moment. Garin is the better player by far but he’s not healthy and his level recently has reflected that. Whether Sock has enough to defeat him remains to be seen but this is not a match he would like to drop.
It’s widely expected to be a competitive match due to the surface but I still think backing Sock here is smarter. Garin has not won since January and his level has been quite poor. A shoulder injury in tennis is very difficult to navigate and if it’s giving him discomfort I don’t think he can overcome it easily.
It’s Houston, it’s American soil so back the American for the upset win.
