Sasnovich in Good Recent Form

Sasnovich, like all Russian and Belarussian players, is competing under a neutral flag in Charleston.

She has appeared in three WTA finals, most recently in the Melbourne Summer Set in January, but has finished on the losing side on each occasion.

Not known as a clay court player, she may want to draw on the inspiration of her performance in doubles, reaching the quarter-finals of the Italian Open in 2019, and the last eight of the French Open a year later.

Although she was beaten in the first round of the Australian Open, her form since then has been good. She reached the quarter-finals in St. Petersburg, and the second round in both Doha and Indian Wells.

She did even better in Miami where she got to the fourth round for the first time, before losing to the Swiss Olympic gold medallist from last year, Belinda Bencic.

Kalinina Reached Fourth Round in Miami

Kalinina enjoyed a highly successful season last year on the ITF circuit in which she won four titles, and began the year by reaching a new career high ranking.

She had a poor time in Australia, where she suffered a series of early defeats, and then became ill, meaning that she missed more than a month of action, during which time, like all Ukrainian players, she was affected by the armed Russian invasion of her country.

However, she made a winning return to action in Indian Wells, defeating the Frenchwoman Clara Burel, and, although she was beaten by Iga Świątek,  she did take the new world number one to three sets.

She did even better in Miami, with three battling three set victories, with Madison Keys among her victims but then, having lost the first set to love, had to retire injured from her match with Jessica Pegula, the world number 21.

Sasnovich v Kalinina Prediction and Tip

Both women should feel confident coming into this match, as they are both in good recent form. That should male for a close match, with little to choose between them. Kalinina’s higher ranking makes her a marginal favourite.
