Ulrikke Eikeri v Nadiya Kichenok Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the two 29-year old qualifiers.

Rare Appearance at This Level for Eikeri

Despite the exploits of Casper Ruud in the men’s game, Norway is not known for producing a supply of great tennis players, and it is rare to find Ulrikke appearing in the main draw of major tournaments, although she has played Fed Cup for her country.

Like her opponent, she has enjoyed her best success at senior level in doubles, finishing runner-up at the Lausanne Open last July, and, with Ellen Peres of Australia, winning the Tenerife Open last October, her first senior WTA title.

Her one previous appearance at this level this year came in Adelaide, where she came through qualifying before losing to Cori Gauff in the first round.

But she earned her place in Charleston after trouncing Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands, and then defeating Heather Watson of Great Britain, the world number 105.

Kichenok Beats Two Americans in Qualifying

Kichenok is far better known for her exploits on a doubles court than what she has achieved in singles. She has won seven senior WTA titles, and has recently formed an effective partnership with Raluca Olaru of Romania that has seen them reach four finals in the past year, winning two of them, most recently the Chicago Open last August.

They were runners-up in the Kremlin Cup two months later.

The peak of her singles career was back in 2014 when she reached 100 in the world.

Since then, though, she has sunk down the rankings, and she had not played in a competitive event since failing to qualify for Chicago last September.

But entering the qualifying competition in Charleston, she pulled off a surprise win by beating the experienced American Christina McHale in three sets, and then thrashed her compatriot, Catherine Harrison, dropping just one game to the world number 271.

Eikeri v Kichenok Prediction and Tip

One of these qualifiers is guaranteed a place in the second round. They are both somewhat unknown quantities, but given that Kichenok has barely played recently, Eikeri should start favourite to advance.
