Sloane Stephens v Qinwen Zheng Head to Head

Sloane Stephens endured her best stretch of the season a couple of weeks ago in Guadalajara where she reached the final and defeated Bouzkova in it. It was a trophy that she missed for a long time yet not much came out of it sadly. Her next events were the Sunshine Double events in Miami and Indian Wells yet inspiring tennis was missing.
She crashed out in the first round of Indian Wells and in the 2nd round of Miami. To be fair she faced off against Naomi Osaka and Jessica Pegula and these two are simply better players than Stephens at the moment. She will be looking for more success at the Charleston Open with the draw a bit more in her favour.
Clay has always been a pretty good surface for Stephens so perhaps she can have a run like the one she had in Guadalajara.

Zheng to Test Herself on Clay
Qinwen Zheng played 22 matches this season and all of them came on hard courts. She has a very good record of 16 wins and only six losses and that great form allowed her to climb on the rankings. She is ranked firmly in the top 100 with a good chance to rise even further depending on her results this year.
Clay will be an interesting part of the season for Zheng who has the game to be really good on the surface. Her record on it in the past is exceptionally good and it proves that the Chinese player won’t shy away from playing on the surface despite being naturally inclined to hard courts.
A good test will be Stephens in Charleston as the surface is clay and plays similarly to clay but also quite a bit faster. It will simply be a good transitioning event before she travels along with the Tour to Europe for some red clay action.
Stephens v Zheng Prediction and Tip
They never played so far and there is very little to go by. In theory, either one can win this match as both have the weapons to defeat the other player. There are also glaring issues in the games of both which are an easy target for any game planning around that.
Form has been on the side of Zheng but only slightly. Stephens has played solid but simply lost to better players. Stephens is also playing at home and the crowd will back her for sure. It’s quite tricky to predict but I will back Stephens to win this one.
I don’t expect her to win this in straight sets but I do think she will have enough to pull it out. Zheng is young and her time will come in the following months.
