Jordan Thompson is bringing a 6-7 record to the tournament.
The Australian was a quarterfinalist in Dallas and recently won his opening round matches in Indian Wells and Miami but couldn’t go past the second round in either of the two tournaments.
The World No. 83 likes playing on faster surfaces, that is on hard and grass courts he is relative inexperienced on clay and a 10-18 career record on the surface testifies that.
He will be making his third main draw appearance in Houston. He was beaten in the first round on debut in 2018 but made it to the last eight stage in 2019.
Last year, while he did well on the hard courts at the back end of a 21-21 season, he continued to struggle on clay, reaching just one quarterfinal in Mallorca. Could he find more success on the surface this year?

Diez in as Lucky Loser
World No. 292 Steven Diaz will be playing his first tour-level main-draw match since losing the first round of the French Open in 2020.
Diez defeated the United States’ Zachary Svajda 6-3, 6-2 in the first qualifying round but fell to the Netherlands’ Gijs Brouwer in three in the second qualifying round. He still made it to the main draw as a lucky loser.
The 31-year-old Canadian featured in two Davis Cup matches against the Netherlands this year, but lost both of them. Apart from those two matches, he has only played in lower-level tournaments, but didn’t taste much success in them either. He reached a quarterfinal in an ITF tournament in Antalya but has failed to reach that deep in any of the other tournaments.
He has a 1-4 record in finals on the Challenger Tour, and 22-12 in the Futures finals.

Despite not being in best of forms, this should be an easy outing for Thompson. Expect the Aussie to advance with a straight sets win.
