Cornet overcame Parks 6-0, 7-5 to seal her match-up against Baptiste as she looks to shrug off a 1-6 win-loss record in the lead-up to Charleston Open.
After racing through the first set for the loss of just five points, Cornet met with some resistance in the second when Parks broke her immediately and was up 3-0 and then 5-1.
It was Cornet’s tenacity that shone through as she came back strongly to win the next six games in a row to complete an easy win in the end. Cornet’s issue, however, isn’t just her poor recent form but also her record on clay.
Over the years, she has struggled to get going on this surface, registering just five wins from 15 matches over the last couple of years.

Baptiste Shock for Ruse
Elena Gabriela Ruse was 2/5 favourite going into her opening round match against Baptiste but American recorded a rampaging win instead.
Baptiste won 6-3, 6-0 in little over an hour to march into the second round after having lost three matches in a row coming into this one.
Interestingly, this was only Baptiste’s second WTA win on clay having last featured at French Open last season. Making into the main draw as a qualifier, the American had shocked Anna Blinkova in her opener before falling to Sofia Kenin.
She will now look to make it two in two for the first time on this surface and given her record at the ITF level on clay (she is 43-21 overall on this surface), it might not be too much beyond her to cause a surprise.
