Leylah Fernandez broke out in a major fashion at last year’s US Open however the Canadian failed up to that following the success. Yes, she’s had wins this year and yes she’s won a title this year as well however an 8-4 record on the year is nothing major.
She definitely has the potential to be one of the best players in the world however she needs to start making consistent runs. SO far it’s quite mediocre overall with the occasional burst. It’s not good enough for her and maybe she can improve on her clay game this year.
It’s pretty decent but she needs more matches on the surface and events like these with faster clay could prove quite good for her. Overall she’s the favourite in this one and she should win it.

Linette Continues to Struggle
Magda Linette is not playing very good tennis this year. A 5-7 record does not look too bad on paper but the eye test tells you a different story. Lately, it’s been trending up with some solid performances in Miami and a very strong win in round one of this event.
However, it’s unlikely she’s going to be able to sustain a very high level moving forward. Facing Fernandez in the 2nd round is not an enticing prospect and she will have a very tough time against the relentless Canadian. Linette mostly does best when she attacks and not the other way around.
It’s unlikely she’ll get much chance to do so against Fernandez so this might be rough for her.
Fernandez v Linette Prediction and Tip
They played once before and interestingly enough it was on clay. Slower clay than this but still clay. Fernandez opened the match with 1-6 but came back to finish strongly. It shows a decent amount of adjustability by the Canadian and she will be better prepared this time around.
She’s a much better player now and she once again should have the upper hand in most rallies. Linette does poorly when she needs to defend and she will be doing a lot of that against Fernandez. I think the Canadian will win this comfortably despite a recent improvement from Linette. There is just too much quality difference.
