Joao Sousa v Roberto Carballes-Baena Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before on the senior tour, all of those matches coming on clay, and Carballes-Baena has won each time. The Spaniard won in this tournament eight years ago in three sets, and followed that up with straight set wins in Rio in 2017 and in Cordoba last year.

Sousa Needs to Up His Game Again

Sousa has already won on the ATP tour this year. His victory in Pune in February was his first in four years, and his fourth in all.

However, he failed to carry that form over, because he had lost every main draw match since before arriving in Morocco.

The Portuguese number one would not necessarily have been confident going into his match with the number five seed, Federico Delbonis of Argentina, the world number 35.

But he made a strong start, breaking the Argentine in the first game of the match, and another break earned him the first set.

The pair swapped breaks in the middle of the second set, but serving to stay in the second set, Sousa came under pressure and Delbonis converted a break point to level the match.

In the second game of the third set Sousa saved three break points and that proved to be crucial as he broke the Delbonis serve soon afterwards, and then once more for good measure to seal the win.

Carballes-Baena Back in his Natural Element of Clay

Carballes-Baena’s solitary ATP tour success remains the Chile Open title which he clinched two years ago, but he has had plenty of success on clay on the Challenger tour, where he has won seven events, two of them in Morocco.

He finished runner-up in a tournament in Las Palmas in February.

The Spaniard is one of those players glad to be back on clay after struggling on the North American hard courts – he was beaten in the first round in both Indian Wells and Miami.

Pitted in the first round against the Italian Marco Cecchinato, the world number 97, the Spaniard began well, breaking the Italian in the first game of the match. The Italian hit back to level, but then dropped his serve once more and the first set belonged to Carballes-Baena.

The second set was dominated by serve – neither man was able to force a break point. That meant a tie-break, and it was the Spaniard who raced into a five point lead. There was no coming back for Cecchinato from there.

Sousa v Carballes-Baena Prediction and Tip

Carballes- Baena has a 100% record against Sousa in head to head matches, and will be confident of extending that record.
