Cristian Garin v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

He would have expected greater things for himself after reaching the third round at Australian Open but Garin’s form fall has been so drastic that he did not go into his opening round encounter against Jack Sock as a favourite.
This, on a surface, he enjoys playing the most and has a collection of five ATP titles.
Since that third round appearance in Melbourne, Garin had lost five matches in a row including three on clay. Two of those defeats on this surface were straight-set ones, including a 6-2, 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Federico Coria and a 6-3, 6-3 loss at the hands of Alejandro Tabilo.
Which is why when he fell behind a set to Jack Sock, the writing seemed to be on the wall.
Fortunately for Garin, he managed to find a way back out of trouble and completed a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win over his American opponent, but the question now is whether he can make it two in two? Can he overturn his shoddy performances and register just his fifth win of the season?

Thompson Routs Diez
The 83rd-ranked Thompson hasn’t had a great year either but coming up against Canada’s Sebastian Diez in the first round, he was a favourite.
And he played like one too, registering a 6-3, 6-2 win over his opponent in an hour and 35 minutes to seal his second round berth.
Thompson out-served his opponent by winning 85% of his first serve points to Diez’s 55% and saved the only break-point he faced in the entire encounter. On the other hand, Thompson broke Diez three times from the nine opportunities he got in what was his first match of the season on clay.
In fact, it was his first match on red dirt since getting knocked out in the first round at Roland-Garros last year in May, making it an even better showing.
Garin would be a tougher opponent given his own love for clay but one who has been found vulnerable even on this surface. Can Thompson make it two in two?
